America is getting older. Baby-boomers are confronted with the problem of helping their elderly parents find the best living situation for their old age. It won't be long before they and their own children will find themselves in the same situation.

One of the most promising retirement alternatives today is the Assisted Living Facility, a residence in which elderly people can live autonomously yet be provided with essential services like food, housekeeping, on-premises medical attention and social activities.

Most of the information available to prospective residents and their adult children comes from the brochures of these very enterprises and a handful of books on the subject. None of these publications were written by a resident of one of these facilities.

Carol Netzer has been a resident in assisted living facilities for over four years. She is also a trained psychologist, naturally inclined to observe human behavior wherever she goes. She is uniquely qualified to write about the difference between a successful and unsuccessful experience for the new resident in assisted living.

This book is a unique combination of descriptions of day-to-day operations in assisted living, personal impressions, and observations of fellow-residents and how they interact. It is sure to be a valuable resource for people who are either considering making the commitment to assisted living or are urging an aging parent to do so.

If you've ever wondered what it's like — REALLY like — to live in an assisted living facility, this is a book you'll most certainly want to read. Author Carol Netzer, a respected psychologist by trade and a resident of one such facility, is also a tremendous observer and writer. The book itself started as a blog, through which she'd share snippets and stories about what she overheard at the dining room table or in an elevator, etc. Some of the stories are poignant. Some are downright hilarious. But they all have the ring of truth and virtually parallel the precise words spoken by residents.

Who knows when any one of us might find ourselves in circumstances that call for an assisted living facility, or even a skilled nursing facility. (I happen to work in communications for one of the latter, a very good one, I'm happy to say) and I know how abruptly life can change and force people to make decisions to give up independence they never, ever anticipated. It happens. If for no other reason, this book is worth reading.

Great insiders perspective into the thoughts and emotions of those living within your properties.
Beautifully written, well-researched and thoughtful, this book would be a great help to anyone contemplating entering assisted living.
Excellent, told from someone experiencing living in Assisted Living.
An detailed and very personal honest, first-hand account of life in two assisted living facilities. Ms. Netzer covers the good and the bad in a fair and candid manner. I found this book very helpful, especially as I look to my own future.
This book is the only one I have seen that was written by one of the inmate in "senior housing". As one who is heading that way... I found Ms Netzer's book helpful. It could have used a good editor - but, that in no way detracted from the usefulness or the overall charm of the book.
An excellent book well written by an articulate and keen observer of the world around her. Carol Netzer has taken the later years of her career as a psychologist and her situation as an assisted-living resident to write about what it means to be in her shoes -- and in the shoes of the other residents. I don't know of any other book that provides an insider's view.
