Those 7 References A Study of 7 References to Homosexuality in the Bible edition by John Dwyer Religion Spirituality eBooks
This is a very controversial topic in many circles as most religious folks well know. Excluding homosexuals from full church participation today follows in the footsteps of earlier exclusionary efforts toward African Americans, women, and other marginalized groups. I am well aware of the "7 references" and many books have been written to "justify" them, just as in past times against other groups. This is the first book I have come across (there may well be others) that articulates the arguments on both sides of the issue of excluding or accepting homosexuals in the church. Author Dwyer does a workman like job presenting the evidence on both sides. His references are well documented. He does not himself take a point of view on the issue, and I appreciate his objectivity. I recommend this book, especially for those who think they have their minds made up, one way or the other.Product details

Those 7 References A Study of 7 References to Homosexuality in the Bible edition by John Dwyer Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
A good book! A little difficult to understand and follow a times, however after back tracking several times, I understood what the author was saying! It certainly makes good sense to me!
The book is extremely detailed in nature and does an excellent job taking Scripture in context by printing entire chapters of the verses in question as well as looking at the original language and different emphases that are typically lost in standard translation. This book will mostly likely challenge your views on homosexuality, especially if you were raised up from a fundamentalist background like I was. That's exactly the point, though. Those 7 References presents a very thorough debunking of common misconceptions Christians have about homosexuality, while backing up it's claims and assertions.
This book is insightful, scholarly, and inspiring. The evangelical Christian case against same sex relationships or marriage. is totally without merit.
Those 7 References A Study of 7 References to Homosexuality in the Bible is a reference book. It is not a novel or an easy read book. What it is, is a book that has been written by the Bishop who is a homosexual and has done extensive research into the areas of homosexuality and what the bible does and does not say about homosexuality. It is a very good book to read if you have questions about homosexuals attending church and whether they are accepted by God. It is an excellant book to read if you are religious and you have a family member who is homosexual and you have a battle accepting them because of your beliefs. I recommend this book if you are homosexual and think you can not be a christian because you are gay,it will answer alot of questions and allow you to accept yourself and know that God accepts you too.
This is one of the finest books of its type. It is a convincing remedy against abuse of scripture. This author very convincingly addresses each of the so-called "clobber texts", passages of the Bible used to condemn one particular group; gays and lesbians. One reference after another is considered thoroughly and then discounted as a valid means of condemnation. I am most particularly grateful and impressed with the author's section on Sodom and Gomorrah. The author links Genesis 19 to Judges 19, two stories that are strikingly similar in their details and tellingly different in important ways. I am indebted to this author for his consideration of how the Sodom story appears at first almost an interruption of the Abraham story and of how the overarching story is about God's covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and later with Israel. It is an important principle of Bible study that we must not bring our assumptions to the Bible, but must give the Bible an opportunity to explain itself. Sometimes later passages will comment (with further insight) the significance of earlier events. For example, Ezekiel 1649 provides a very telling commentary on the Sodom and Gomorrah story.
If you have ever been abused as a result of the misuse of Scripture, this book is for you. The Christian church at large is being shaken by this controversy. This book may be added to the chorus declaring that we have nothing to fear. This book addresses the subject by taking each passage very seriously. I am most grateful for the thoroughness and scholarship of this author.
Somewhat repetitive and could have benefited from more detailed analysis of the Hebrew and Greek words or phrases under discussion. But, overall a good study of the relevant texts ten used to argue that homosexuality as we understand it today as a mutual, loving relationship is a sin. A valuable text for group discussion by those struggling to understand how to interpret the scripture in light of first and second century cultural norms regarding the NT and ancient traditions of understanding from the OT as it relates to 21st century lifestyles and practices.
This book provides a good argument for verses in the Old Testament that are used to condemn homosexuality. It reviews them and refutes the condemnation of homosexuals using textual and cultural evidence. The chapters regarding verses in the New Testament don't provide as well constructed of an argument. The reasoning provided starts to ramble in some areas and becomes hard to follow. The conclusion does a better job of explaining the author's main idea in these chapters. Overall it was an informative exploration of these seven verses in the Bible.
There are many typos in the kindle version of the book.
