Democracy and Education An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education is a 1916 book by John Dewey. Dewey sought to at once synthesize, criticize, and expand upon the democratic (or proto-democratic) educational philosophies of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Plato.[citation needed] He saw Rousseau's philosophy as overemphasizing the individual and Plato's philosophy as overemphasizing the society in which the individual lived. For Dewey, this distinction was largely a false one; like George Herbert Mead and Lev Vygotsky, he viewed the mind and its formation as a communal process. Thus the individual is a meaningful concept only when regarded as an inextricable part of his or her society, and the society has no meaning apart from its realization in the lives of its individual members. As evidenced in his later Experience and Nature (1925), this practical element, learning by doing, arose from his subscription to the philosophical school of Pragmatism.

The book is fine. Just don't buy this edition.The text is in the public domain. This publisher just dumped the text into a self-pub template and printed it. Clearly no editing was done. In-text references to page numbers are inaccurate. References aren't in superscript and footnotes simply appear at the end of the chapter in the body of the text. What I can only assume are OCR errors are rampant. The headings on each page merely repeat the title of the book, not the title of the chapter (as is customary in academic texts). Simon & Brown claims a copyright on "this edition" but makes no mention of when the original edition was published, which is essential information for anyone using the text in an academic setting.
I would discourage anyone from ever purchasing any text published by Simon & Brown.

Excellent resource for a graduate course I teach titled Politics in Education.
Needed this for my poli-sci class. Came in great condition and highly would recommend this for other poli-sci classes.
So far this book is extremely thought provoking and written in the style of the 1900's, which I love.
Great read and the hardcover will ensure many years of legible reading if you are interested in boring theorizing.
This is not a review of the book - Dewey rocks. But this publication is cheaply formatted and was distracting. Was using this for a paper and didn't even want to reference this publication so I found an official copy.

Hello all.
First off, this work is an important work of Dewey, someone I deeply respect; HOWEVER....
Whatever you do, do not buy this hardcover edition of Democracy and Education. It is a cheap ebook / online edition of the book in a cheap hardcover binding. The text literally looks like it was printed off of a website. The font is horrible, the text is small, and there is no space between the lines. It is honestly disgusting to look at especially for the price of nearly 30 dollars. Buy another edition or a paperback copy if you really want to feel like you have a REAL book.
